The Art of New York City

New York, what can I say?! The best city in the goddam world, right? You got this NYC. My love for New York is real.

When the boys were little we stayed at the Gansevoort Hotel in the meet-packing district. I left the boys playing with one of those floaty footballs (you know the ones that are virtually see-through) in the rooftop pool whilst I took a whizz (is that a wee? Dash might be a better word) around The Whitney. Looking back, that was irresponsible or should I say dumb? (not the first time for either).

On my return, the boys were nowhere to be found. Eventually, two terrified boys climbed out of the wardrobe. They had kicked the football off the rooftop. I imagined it floating elegantly onto the street below. The boys imagined the worst.

I popped to the deli around the corner and got bagels to calm their nerves. We sat in the window seat of our room eating and watching the world go by down below.

Have you ever noticed NYC is crazy about round things? Bagels, doughnuts, so here is a shot from the inspired street photographer nanny Vivian Maier. And the slang for police is popo (circles, typographers) in New York City, yes sir.

As the boys got older I left them in bed every morning and walked the streets of NYC from 6 am until 11 am. I felt like Hopper peeking through brownstone windows. Even the trash carts and fire engines feel exciting to me in NYC. The energy, the pace, the accent, yaaasss New York.

I can't even begin to tell you about the amount of art there is in NYC like everything else they are having it large. Forty-four per cent of the art market to be correct.

On my most recent trip, I discovered - Jenny Rochin and Jeffery Gibson my two new favourite artists.

Jenny Rochin - Paintings on Clay - Hauser and Wirth 2024

Jeffery Gibson - Didn’t take notes - Yikes,

Don't even get me started on Upstate. So, you've only got one goddamn life so why not wake up goddam early and walk the goddam streets of NYC. You can join me. I will be doing that until the day I die.

Here are some of my favourite museums and galleries in NYC:

Coffee, bagels, pizza:

Finally, a massive thank you to street photographer Amy Touchette and Art Expert Yael Raviv Ferber for hosting us this time.

Much Love,

Julesx
