Here at Blank White Space we feel honoured to have Jane Hilton’s photographs in our collection. Jane is an iconic British photographer with a huge passion for people and the USA. She drives a gold Ford Mustang and wore a stetson with her wedding dress! Jane still shoots on film with no retouching. Jane was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society and exhibits in London, Europe and the US. I love Jane with all my heart, she is a friend and an inspiration to the world.

We are privileged that Jane has contributed her photographs of Christian Louboutin’s garden that she shot at dawn in his 13th century chateau in Vendee to our collection. Louboutin Pyramid Hedges along with Louboutin Gardening and Louboutin Vines of Wisteria Jane’s prints are small limited edition runs so they won’t be around for long. I’d recommend investing in a print today.

Now, let’s chat to Jane….

Firstly how are you feeling today?

I feel very blessed to have my passion for photography in these strange times. I have always enjoyed discovering different places and incredible people through my camera lens. Creativity is one of the best therapies.

Has nature helped you heal in lockdown?

Absolutely. It’s been magical to hear the bird song and look up at the clear skies. Nature has taken on a new intensity for all our senses which has been extraordinary.

How do you incorporate nature into your everyday life?

Long walks around London through the back streets to Hampstead Heath. Observing all the beautiful gardens and discovering new things I have never seen before. 

What message do you have for people about the natural world?

Respect ‘Mother nature’ to help protect what we have. She rules our world, not us.

Is your art inspired by mother nature?

I have always found the deserts of the American West inspiring and good for my soul. Wide open spaces, blue skies and 180-degree vistas of fauna with mountains in the background…….plus the most beautiful light that makes an exquisite colour palette.

Tell us a bit more about your work and your studio.

I travel a lot for my work, mostly to the states, but sometimes to places like the Maldives and Antigua. Discovering different cultures is exciting and a privilege. My work is mostly about American Culture nowadays having made three books about it. I still shoot on film so when I am home I am constantly in and out of the labs, and then editing the work in my studio. It’s a good balance.

Is your home a sanctuary? 

Not sure I would call it my ‘sanctuary’. It is very busy at home. We love to share it with family and friends and are fortunate to have a home that other people enjoy. My studio is definitely my sanctuary where I get to think, read books and research my projects.

Do you have a message for people less fortunate than us who might not have a safe place to live?

I absolutely cannot imagine not having a home. Of all the things in the world to not be able to have, a home is inconceivable to me. I always give to the homeless when I can, and hope I have taught our son to understand the importance of this.
